How to Avoid Frizzy Hair in Australia
No one likes to feel like their hair is frizzy and out of control, and here in Australia, there are a lot of factors at play that can make your hair wild and unruly. We’ve put together a little guide on how you can help if you want to be done with frizzy hair for good. Read on to find out the main causes of frizzy hair and how you can help prevent them.
Humidity
One of the most common causes of frizzy hair in Australia is, of course, humidity. We have a hot climate here, and it’s your hair’s worst enemy. Even with the best haircare on the planet, sometimes the humidity is unavoidable. However, there are a lot of things that you can do to help reduce the chances of humidity causing your hair to frizz up.
Solution: Try Hair Oil & Leave-In Conditioner
If the humidity is your worst enemy, then your best bet is to try a hair oil and/or a leave-in conditioner combination. Try not to be excessive with these products, as you don’t want to cause your hair to be too oily, but a little bit of oil or leave-in conditioner after you wash your hair in the shower can really help to keep the frizz at bay.
Heat Products
Heat products do a number on your hair, it’s unavoidable. The occasional blow-dry or straighten isn’t going to ruin your hair for good, but the more you use them, the drier and more damaged your hair will become.
Solution: Towel-Dry or Air-Dry Your Hair
Where possible, towel dry your hair with a microfibre cloth or leave it to dry of its own accord. Not only will it look better, but your hair will love you for it.
Friction
Friction is a major culprit when it comes to morning frizz. We’re talking about friction while you’re sleeping, and/or friction from excessive towel rubbing when you’re jumping out of the shower. Think about the way that static electricity works and apply that to your head. Yikes!
Solution: Use a Durag or Try Silk Pillow Cases
It may not seem like the first thing you’d try, but both of these things are really great if your frizz is coming from friction while you sleep. A durag will help to keep your hair under wraps while you’re sleeping, while a silk pillowcase is soft on your delicate follicles and will reduce the amount of wear and tear on your hair at night.
Excessive Shampoo
If you’re someone who likes to wash your hair five times a week, there is a good chance that this is contributing to the level of frizz in your hair. Shampoo tends to strip our hair of its natural oils, especially if you’re using the general shampoo that you grab from your local grocery store. While it’s important to shampoo your hair regularly, too much can lead to the kind of dryness that leads to frizz.
Solution: Wash Your Hair Less, or Try a Frizz-Free Product
Obviously, your first port of call could be to wash your hair a little less – try no more than 3 times per week. If you’re still coming up with frizz, you might want to consider adding a frizz-control shampoo and conditioner to your regime.
Split Ends
Last but not least, split ends! While split ends don’t exactly cause frizz, they certainly contribute to the frizzy hair look. Once hair is split, you might be able to use a hair masque or a treatment at your local barber to repair it, but this route won’t work out for everyone.
Solution: Get a Trim!
If you’ve tried everything to repair your hair, including treatment at the barber, your next port of call is to simply trim the split ends off and try again with your luscious, new locks. Once you’ve had a trim, make sure you examine your hair regime and figure out what caused the ends to split in the first place so that you can minimise the amount of frizz that returns!
